Alice Louise Walton (Alice Walton) was born on 7 October 1949 in Newport, Arkansas, United States. Her father’s name is Sam Walton, was a well-known businessman and entrepreneur. Alice Walton is most famously known as the creator of Walmart Inc. (formerly Wal-Mart Stores, Inc) and Sam’s Club (formally Sam’s West, Inc). His mother, Helen Robson Walton, was an eminent advocate for art and his business partner, the youngest of her parents’ four children. She had three older brothers. They were Samuel Robson Walton (b. 1944), John Thomas Walton (b. 1946), and Jim Carr Walton (b. 1948).

One year after she was born, the family relocated to Bentonville in the city of Bentonville in the northeastern region of Arkansas. They established “Walton’s 5 & 10,” the first store that bore their initials. Bentonville was also the place where the family was to settle down eventually. When she was a kid, she was highly attracted to art. She bought her first artwork, a replica of Picasso’s ‘Blue Node, at ten years old. She also loved playing outdoors, riding horses, and drawing watercolors with her mom when they took camping trips.

Controversy

Alice Walton was involved in several car crashes, with one fatal. The driver lost control of her rental vehicle during the family reunion of Thanksgiving in 1983 near Acapulco and fell into a ravine. She broke her leg. She has been airlifted out of Mexico, went through nearly two dozen procedures, and still suffers from her wounds. In April 1989, she kills when she struck 50-year-old Oleta Hardin, who had crossed a highway within Fayetteville, Arkansas. Witnesses reported that Walton was traveling at high speed at the time; however, there were no charges filed. She was arrested in 1998 after she smashed into a gas meter when driving under the impaired by alcohol. She was fine, $925.

Career

After graduating from Trinity, Alice Walton began working at Walmart as a buyer for children’s clothing. Then, she relocated to New Orleans, where she started her career as a broker at the firm that deals in stock brokerage E.F. Hutton. But she wasn’t very good at what she did and resigned from the position and became an equity analyst and a money manager at First Commerce Corporation, where she employe for a short time. After having left First Commerce Corporation, it was the vice-chairperson and director of all investment-related operations for the family-owned Arvest Bank Group for a short period.

Following the Securities and Exchange Commission, it was 1979 when Walton and ten other Hutton employees were have charged with excessive options trading. While she claimed she was not in violation of laws, she agreed to the settlement to avoid lengthy litigation. She has done barred from engaging in securities for a minimum of 6 months. At the end of the 80s in the 1980s, Alice moved back to Arkansas and set up an operation to raise cutting horses. In the meantime, she began becoming involved in the family’s business. In 1988, she founded an investment bank named Llama Company as a subsidiary of Walton Enterprises.

The name has inspired by a llama her mother received as a present that has given to her. Llama Company ran for ten years before closing in 1998. The bank wrote bonds, managed assets as well as loans to other businesses. As its president, chairman woman, CEO, and president, Walton worked with enthusiasm to boost the economy that was booming in Northwest Arkansas, at that time, ignored by Wall Street. However, the 90s gave her two big successes being the first person to be elected chairperson of the Northwest Arkansas Council was one of them. The creating of the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (1998) was the second.

In 1998, when the Llama Company closed down, she resigned from high-finance for a time to enjoy her horse. She also ended up and relocated the farm she had established into Texas within the year. In 2015 she removed her ranch and moved into Fort Worth, Texas, closer to Crystal Bridges because it required more attention. The place has been her home since. Alice Walton is best known for her part in the creation of Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport. She not only contributed $15 million in the beginning as the initial financing for the airport’s construction, but as the director of the Llama Company, she also helped complete the airport by securing $79.5 million in bonds for development.

As an avid collector of art, she founded the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art to fulfill the mission of depicting the country’s history through art. She is currently its chairperson. The museum is free of admission fees.

Alice Walton has received several honors for her contributions to philanthropy to the community. The Smithsonian Institute’s Archives of American Art Medal, the John Cotton Dana Medal for Visionary Leadership in Museums, and the Leonore and Walter Annenberg Award for Diplomacy through the Arts. She was admitted into the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001 and has also inducted into the International Women’s Forum Hall of Fame in 2018.
