Nikki Haley (Nimrata Nikki Haley) was born on 20 January 1972 in Bamberg, South Carolina, and her birth name is Nimrata Nikki Randhawa. Nikki Haley is the daughter of Indian Punjabi Sikh immigrant parents. Her father’s name is Ajit Sar Randhawa, and her mother’s name is Raj Kaur Randhawa, who came from India’s Amritsar District. Nimrata Nikki Haley’s father was a professor at Punjab Agricultural University, and her mother got her law degree in Delhi. Haley was growing up in Punjabi, and her middle name was Haley.
Haley was born in Canada to parents who moved there after her father got a scholarship offer at the University of British Columbia. After receiving her father’s Ph.D. in 1969 and accepting a position at Voorhees College (a historically black college), he moved from Canada to South Carolina. Nikki Randhawa was married to Michael Haley on 8 September 1996. They celebrated with both Sikh- and Methodist ceremonies. The couple has two children: Rena (born 8 June 1998) and Nalin (born 6 September 2001). Haley converted in 1997 to Christianity, and she and her husband are regular attendees at the United Methodist Church. She also attends Sikh worship services occasionally once or twice per year.
