Alan Hamel was co-host of the Canadian children’s television show Razzle Dazzle (1961-64). The presentation included a talking turtle, Howard. In the after half of the 1960s when he hosted two syndicated game shows, which were broadcast on all owned and operated ABC TV stations and others, including Wedding Party (1968) and Anniversary Game (1969), in which he came across Suzanne Somers, whom he later wed in 1977.
In the latter part of the 1970s, Alan Hamel was the host of The Alan Hamel show, a well-loved talk show on CTV. People magazine considered him “Canada’s leading TV talk show host.” Following Hamel quitting as host in 1980, the fellow Canadian Alan Thicke took over, which led to the program renaming The Alan Thicke Show. Then Don Harron continued the franchise hosting his talk show which aired during the same time slot.
After half of the 1970s and the early 80s, Hamel worked as a pitchman in commercials for American Stores, a coast-to-coast chain of supermarkets. He created advertisements supporting Alpha Beta stores in the western United States and appeared in a few spots to promote Acme Markets in the northeastern United States.
Hamel was eventually a producer, frequently involved in his wife’s projects. Hamel occasionally appeared as an actor and occasionally on Somers’s show.
